🪥 Little Teeth, Big Smiles: Dentist Tips, Toothbrushing & Healthy Lunchboxes

When you think about your child’s development in their early years, you probably think of their first steps, their first words, and learning to share their toys. But there is another massive milestone that is just as important for their future well-being: looking after their growing bodies and their very first teeth.
We know the reality of family life. Getting a toddler to stand still and brush their teeth twice a day can sometimes feel like an Olympic sport! But building these habits early is absolutely vital. When a child eats well and has healthy teeth, they have the energy to play, can sleep soundly, speak clearly, and smile with confidence.
It’s why promoting good oral health and healthy eating isn't just something we're passionate about here at Green Coat Nursery—it's actually a key statutory requirement in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework set by the Department for Education. We take this responsibility seriously because we know the difference it makes.
The Local Picture: Why We Need to Act Early
Looking after tiny teeth is a team effort between nursery and home. According to the latest 2025 National Dental Epidemiology Programme data, more than 1 in 5 five-year-olds in England have experienced some form of tooth decay—and sadly, here in Birmingham, we see rates that reflect this national challenge.
But here is the wonderful news: tooth decay is almost entirely preventable! By building positive, fun habits while they are young, we can protect those precious smiles for a lifetime.
🎉 Exciting Announcement: Our Preschool Toothbrushing Club!
We believe that learning healthy habits should be fun, not a chore. That’s why we are thrilled to announce that we have introduced regular, supervised toothbrushing sessions for all our preschool children!
Instead of it being a battle at the bathroom sink at home, we turn brushing into a fun, child-led group activity. To help the children understand why we need to brush, we use the idea of "sugar bugs" - a fun, age-appropriate way to explain plaque and tooth decay that actually makes sense to them. We practice brushing in small circles, sing our special two-minute toothbrushing songs, and learn all about how to brush those tricky bugs away!
To help you keep up the great work at home, we have gifted every single child at Green Coat Nursery their very own toothbrush and tube of fluoride toothpaste to take home. Please check their bags today, and let us know how they get on with their new brushing routine.
🍎 A Quick Note on Healthy Lunchboxes
Of course, protecting little teeth isn't just about brushing - it's also about what we eat.
If your child enjoys our nursery's hot meals, you can rest assured that they are already getting exactly what they need. Our menus are carefully designed to fully meet the DfE’s healthy eating guidelines. They are packed with the right balance of nutrients and are low in sugar to keep bodies energised and teeth strong.
If you prefer to send your child in with a packed lunch, we want to say a huge thank you. We know packed lunches take thought and time on busy mornings - and most of you are already doing brilliantly! To help us keep those "sugar bugs" at bay and support your child's health, please remember our packed lunch guidelines:
- Drinks: Please remember that we provide fresh water and plain milk as standard throughout the day for all children. If you do choose to send a drink from home, please ensure it is only water or plain milk (fruit juices and squashes have hidden sugars that those sugar bugs love!)
- Snacks: Fresh fruit, vegetable sticks, or a small piece of cheese are perfect swaps for sugary treats, sweets, or chocolate bars
- Balance: A healthy main, like a sandwich, wrap, or pasta, helps keep their energy steady all afternoon
The Most Important Step: Registering with a Dentist
While we are doing our bit with healthy food and toothbrushing at nursery, there is one final, crucial piece of the puzzle: taking your child to the dentist.
We know a dentist appointment can feel like just one more thing on a busy parent's never-ending to-do list, but it genuinely makes such a difference. Children should have their first dental check-up as soon as their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday at the latest. Getting them used to the sights, sounds, and the "magic chair" while they are young stops the dentist from becoming a scary place. Plus, NHS dental examinations and treatments are 100% free for children.
If your little one isn't registered with a dentist yet, please make it a priority this week. You can search for local NHS dentists via the NHS Find a Dentist website.
If you need any help looking up local practices around Sparkhill, Billesley, or Bearwood, please just ask our nursery managers.
Because every big smile starts with a small habit—and we're building those habits together, every single day.
